Hi guys, have any of you upgraded your bearings? to what and where did you get them? Has anyone gone all out and switch to full ceramics? Anyone you know?
I've used ceramics, mail ordered from Boca Bearings. You need a very, very light oil, or dry lubricant for those. Otherwise they are worse off than a cleaned up, regular bearing. Also, ceramics are very noisy to run due to the light/dry lubrication.
The thing about upgrading bearings is the benefits you can gain from the higher spool speed. If you are already casting fully loosened, without use of any braking device outside of your thumb, you will benefit from higher speed bearings. If you think you are ready for higher spindle speeds, removing your current bearing shields, degreasing the bearing properly and using a lighter grade of oil should be your first step.
If you are already at this stage, then ceramics will be the next logical step.
However, if you are still requiring the aid of your braking device to control your casting, having a higher speed bearing will either mean getting more birdnests, or using more braking/heavier oil to slow the bearings. That in my mind, kinda defeats the purpose of changing to faster bearings in the first place.
Local bearing shops eg Kian Ho, International Bearings, etc do not have grades above ABEC 5. However, if you remove the ABEC 5 shields, degrease the bearings and apply a very light oil (and thoroughly clean and reoil after every trip), you can get them spin up to very high speeds already.
For a very, very light oil, try trumpet valve oil. Use 1 drop on a degreased and bone dry bearing, give it a few good spins to work the lubricant into all the balls and races, the with a blast of compressed air, blow away any excess. Your bearing on its own should be able to get free spin times of around 8-10 seconds this way.
Bearing sizes are just a description of the Outer Diameter, Inner Diameter and Thickness in mm. Invest in a pair of Vernier calipers. Measure your bearings, then call in an enquiry will save you time and a wasted trip.
