just to start off a topic that i felt it would be interesting
especially to those who are new to the sport.

here we are discussing and sharing about the different
kind of baits and the different ways to hook them up.

please feel free to to share your experiences and

e.g from left to right . u will hook both the prawn prawn shell (this mean is more secure)
e.g frm top to bottom.prawn bottom the shell tend to be softer more easy to break or come off(this way less secure abit) {my personal opinion}

Dude, can you please clarify for what type of fishing you have in mind eg, boat fishing, pond fishing or surf fishing ? The application method for baiting varies for the type of fishing involved.

Agree with ac_ric... the way you hook depends on what type of fishing... Mainly surfcast, pond, bottom bashing. Ill share the way i hook my baits tonight or something

hmm.. nope... i hook from bottom up, it will go through the legs there got a bit of softer skin, through the meat and come out from the shell... hook have to pass through the shell also.. ensure it wont drop off.. so far, my prawns have lasted more than an hour...

That's where youre wrong bro. Even seasoned anglers can benefit from proper hooking of bait. In fact IMO its more important for presentation of bait hooking for offshore especially trolling.

hmmm....
tried hooking up live prawn bait and was
using "apollo" rig. duno why the bait always
"fly" off if i were to cast out too hard.
SIAN.... contribution to the sea.

Prawns have the most tendency to fly off your rig if you cast hard. With apollo rig, it is kinda hard to insert a bait clip given the small distance between each snood.

You could try securing the prawn via using a elastic thread. But's it damn expensive since it is only for $6.50. Saw it at gina's at Changi. Even then, i think the prawn head is gonna fly away. Live prawns just won't take to such impact.

Really the only option is to cast a little softer foregoing distance n go with smaller sized prawns.

just to share... I would normally break the sharp "spear" just above the live prawns eye region. I think the live prawn will be less defensive when you do that. what do you think.. just my opinion

Many hooking styles for different baits... Some general ones..

Paypond

If spinning live prawns, always always hook your live prawn at the tail... Better casting and spins beautifully thru the water... Also less chance of leader entangling...

Offshores

Hooking of live prawn thru tail is always recommended. For medium sized fish which love biting off the head, its recommended to hook the middle section of the prawn but dont reel up too fast as it might cause beehoon and the water resistance against the prawn will be awkward...

If die die wanna hook the head, hook the area above the head...at the small space between the horns... but be careful not to hook the brain..

Hooking of live squid is always recommended at the sotong tail... Reason being most of the time using rangong and hooking the squid at the tail will be more natural

if hooking up sotong strips, also hook at the far end.... this will cause what i call at "country flag" movement when a rangong is put down and there is fast current... the sotong strip will be dangling and flapping causing fish to be attracted.

For hooking of baits for trolling etc, its always recommended to hook it in a way so that it causes little water resistance because in trolling, your fish is gonna have to cut thru the water effectively...

Surfcast

Baiting needles recommended for baitfish... or impact shields... etc...

sometimes i get prawns from market to go fishing..... Can anyone tell me, whether i need or do not need to shell the prawns for surf fishing/fishing from jetty ?

It will definitely off..try using a single rig and attach the 'line release mechanism' on your main line...your live prawn will have no chance to fly off your hook even if you cast out 300mtrs.

You can also use bait elastic. Hook your prawn and wrap bait elastic about 10 times round to tie the prawn to the hook. no need to tie a knot in the elastic, just pull to break.
